Could you tell us what inspired you to pursue a career as a visual artist, and how your journey and artistic practice has evolved over time?

Growing up, I wasn’t really surrounded by art, but I was fortunate to be surrounded by creative people. During high school, I was still in the process of discovering myself. I would draw funny characters for friends but didn’t think of myself as an artist until I went to college. At Fresno City College and later, at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), I devoted myself to printmaking, specializing in screen printing. Interestingly, I never took a painting class during that time.

My early work focused on themes of the elderly finding love later in life. However, after college, due to a lack of access to printing equipment, I transitioned to painting. This change in medium brought a natural shift in subject matter and gave me the space to reflect on who I am and who I was becoming, which is why my current work primarily consists of self-portraits. My approach to painting is still heavily influenced by my printmaking roots.

What is your approach to creating a self-portrait? How much consideration is given to the potential audience when you’re in the process of creation?

My approach to creating a self-portrait is deeply personal. I draw from my own experiences, often capturing moments of passion, longing, vulnerability, and the bittersweet nature of unspoken or hidden connections. I often paint patterns or items that are familiar to me and bring comfort, as well as stylistic pleasure.

While the primary focus in my paintings is myself, I am mindful of the potential audience throughout the creative process. I hope that through these personal reflections, viewers can find points of emotional connection or moments of humor that resonate with their own experiences.

Are there any upcoming projects you’d like to share with us, or any themes you’re excited to explore in your future work?

I’m excited to share that I have two group shows coming up this month (November). Additionally, early next year, I’ll be collaborating with a local company, Plunge Towel, to release a beach towel featuring one of my designs. After these projects, I plan to take a break to regroup and re-energize.
